Time for a break

Well hello,

The month of rest is finally here which means in P&M world, we are preparing to take a break. This year we are coming together as an extended family, 3 generations all heading off to the warmth of Madeira. As it draws closer I can already feel myself beginning to relax, ready to embrace rest.

The last month was a whirlwind of fairly intense client work, end of term juggles and that feeling of ‘just holding on’.

We also celebrated some amazing milestones not just for myself, but for P&M as well.

On the 10 July I attended the HR Magazine Most Influential, an evening recognising and celebrating leading HR professionals. As a peer and industry nominated event, it was a surprise to be notified I had even been listed, but to then find myself ranked at number 10 on the Thinker list was a little bit overwhelming.

I feel so proud of the work I have created under the P&M banner and hearing feedback from peers, on how they love what we do and how they can really hear my voice throughout, still makes me smile as I reflect on what was a really extraordinary experience.

All Change

Labour plans to introduce an Employment Bill within the first 100 days, dubbed the “New Deal for Working People”

So what does this actually mean for you and your people?

There will be multiple changes crossing many areas of employing people, I thought it was useful to share the headliners for simplicity.

  1. Employment Rights and Status
  2. Workplace Protections and Equality
  3. Family-Friendly and Flexible Working
  4. Health, Safety, and Fair Pay
  5. Technology and Workers’ Rights
  6. Trade Unions and Collective Bargaining

All 6 of these areas, will all have a big impact and are multi-layered. However, how can you begin to integrate some of the proposed changes now?

If you plan to recruit in the next few months, you need to consider more around the flexibility of the role, your recruitment process and your onboarding plans. Ensure it is fair and aligned with the future changes and protect against any unequal pay claims through benchmarking and aligning salaries now.

  • Unfair dismissal protection from day one
  • Default flexible working from day one
  • Genuine living wage aligned with the cost of living

Maybe you are considering organisational change, do you know the correct process for redundancies, have you budgeted for the additional costs? How do you manage risk when the following are all due to change?

  • Collective grievance mechanisms
  • Enhanced redundancy rights
  • Enhanced TUPE protections for workers

We are constantly upskilling ourselves so we can support you. We have attended employment law updates and CIPD events, and will continue to support our clients through the changes.

If you know a company who may need us to hold their hands as they begin to navigate it, then we are happy to help. Every single P&M client has come through a referral from within our network, we love that you trust us and recommend to others.

Will it make the Peony bloom?

This is the question we now ask ourselves when making big bold decisions. We have the luxury and freedom to create what we like, but it has to add value, to our clients as well as to us. We can all fall into the trap of serving others first at the expense of enjoyment or growth.

So, when I say a lot of thought has gone into how we will bring the coaching into the P&M model, we really mean it. The multiply reiterations is part of the process and ultimately tested by asking ourselves not only this question but really sitting with how we feel at each stage.

So, under the P&M brand we are proud to be expanding the existing mentoring and coaching support, we will continue to work within the workplace with founders and leaders to develop their people, using the IPC framework as our preferred model.

The Peony Community is new. It is exciting and it is filled with all that new beginning energy. It is launching to the world in September.

At the Peony Community, we want it to attract people who are ready to explore our style of coaching and become part of something that continues to grow.

  • We will make coaching accessible and affordable to all.
  • We will provide a confidential and safe space that allows you to give yourself permission to create a coaching habit, in the way that supports you and your life.
  • We will operate from an altruistic framework so everyone in the community benefits. Creating ripple effects in all we do.

It is open to anyone, wherever you are in the world.

We are now ready to share more information, so if you are interested or just a little curious then sign up for a sneak peek.

Not sure if coaching is for you? Maybe with a hot drink, grab a pen and just write down the question “What will make me bloom?” you never know where it may lead.

This month’s favourites…

Top 2 books this month:

I find calm in books and have read too many to mention this month, some great, some a little so so. However, these 2 stand out for me.

The first is The House of Doors, Tan Twan Eng. I travelled around Malaysia and Borneo solo when I was 22, so the fact this combines a place filled with memories and my favourite era – the 1920’s made this a beautiful read.

The second was recommended to me by the lovely Phanella Fine over brunch, it is Welcome to Glorious Tuga Francesca Segal, and is loosely set around island life of the British Oversea Territories. One of which is St Helena, which is where my paternal family originates and still lives. I loved it and messaged Francesca on Instagram who was equally as thrilled to meet someone with an actual connection! A really lovely summer read.

Podcasts:

As I have been out walking and running more, it means I have listened to more,  so here are just a handful of great finds from Mo Gawdet. He also replied to a message I sent to him after listening to the attachment theory episode- a truly nice guy.

The Slo Mo Podcast is always a win for me. These 3 episodes I loved.
